Weathering
• is the process of wearing away and breaking down earth’s surfaces.
Causes of weathering
1) Roots
2) Water
3) Wind
4) Freezing and Melting
5) Heating and Cooling
6) Acid Rain

1) Roots
Small plant roots grow into a crack so small you can’t see it. The plant grows and gets stronger. The root grows bigger and bigger pushing the crack open.

2) Water
•If you let the water run in the middle of the dirt pile, it would start to carve out a little stream. Water is a very powerful force. Given enough time, a river can carve through rocks. •Waves crashing against rocks can reshape the rocks. Every time a crashes it breaks off a little bit of rock.

3) Wind
•Every time the wind blows it picks up small pieces of dirt and sand. Then those pieces of sand in the air break off more sand from the rocks, like sand paper.

4) Freezing and Melting
Alternating freezing and melting of water in the crack, pushing the rock apart. The crack starts out small but gets bigger with freezing and thawing. When it rains, water gets into cracks. If the water freezes it becomes ice. The ice thaws and the water goes deeper into the crack and freezes again. The ice pushes the crack open, and over time the crack will cause the rock to break apart.

5) Heating and Cooling
During day the sun heats up the rock and then at night it cools down. The heating and cooling and heating and cooling makes the surface of the rock break and crack and “peel” off.

6) Acid rain
The effects of chemical weathering in particular acid rain can be seen on this close up of this statues face. The acid rain has reacted with the mineral grain of the rock which has over time caused cavities to form as well wearing away the definition of the facial features.
